Famed for its gracefully stylish shoes and leather goods, Salvatore Ferragamo now also creates luxuriously whimsical jewellery inspired by its footwear and the symbols associated with its name. The new entrance is the Gancino Zaffiri line by Salvatore Ferragamo Jewels with the collection’s central motif, the Gancino, which originated in the 1970s as a closing device for the brand’s bags.
Reworked with a contemporary twist by master Italian goldsmiths, the symbol is represented in 18k rose gold, embellished with 18 pink sapphires for a light, fresh hint of colour. The Gancino Zaffiri line comprises a necklace, ring, bracelet, and earrings in a matching set, and complements the existing Gancino Diamonds and Gancino Gold lines to elegantly complete the Gancino collection. With its modern and inventive take on a classic motif from Ferragamo’s history, the new Gancino Zaffiri range preserves continuity while revitalising it, no doubt winning a new generation of devotees for the brand, now in its third generation.
Also recently debuted were new additions to its Miniature Preziose collection. It comes with a range of pumps, sandals, wedges, and ankle boots, created from the 1930s to the 1960s for cinema divas, such as Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Judy Garland, and Carmen Miranda. All of them were delightfully transformed into tiny pendants attached to bracelets and chains. Among them is the Maharani, a pendant in yellow gold and red enamel set with 62 white diamonds, and 137 red rubies, blue sapphires, and green tsavorites. The Maharani is an exact, scaled-down replica of Ferragamo’s most precious shoe, a wedge created in 1938 for Indira Devi, the Maharani of Cooch Behar, and originally set with real diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires.
The next pendant, Wood Sandal, is inspired by a Ferragamo creation of 1943. The original wedge was decorated with a ‘mosaic’ that is brilliantly replicated in the jewel with 18k yellow gold and with red and blue enamels. In 1951, Ferragamo created a shoe for the first Italian fashion show held at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The shoe was designed in collaboration with Emilio Schuberth and inspired by the famous Tabi shoes of Japan. Its jewel version is realised in 18k yellow gold with inlaid black enamel, as well as in a striking Oriental-flavoured version of red enamel with inlaid black enamel.
The fourth pendant, Miss Vara, is a take on the famous, ultra-modern shoe made in 1978 by Fiamma Ferragamo, and still one of the most requested models. The necklaces in white or pink gold feature the Vara bow embellished with 12 white diamonds or 12 pink sapphires. The final addition is Red, the famed shoe that Salvatore Ferragamo designed for Marilyn Monroe, presented in two pendant versions: white or yellow gold with 209 white diamonds or 209 red rubies, all impeccably hand-set.
The pieces of the Miniature Preziose are inspired efforts, bringing together the skills of the craftsman and the science and taste of the expert gemmologist, to create works of beauty, luxury, and playful nostalgia. Each miniature bears the traits of the Ferragamo spirit, reflected in the iconic Ferragamo label created by Lucio Venna on the inside of the shoe, and the model name and date of creation engraved on the sole.
