SHE MIGHT BE A DEVOTED ACTRESS, WIFE, AND MOTHER, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO JEWELLERY, PENELOPE CRUZ IS A TRUE PHILANDERER — IN A GOOD WAY. Over the years, the Spanish actress has been spotted wearing pieces by Turkish designer Gilan, fine jewellery by Atelier Swarovski, and of course, stunning collections by Harry Winston, Chopard, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Pomellato — brands with whom she has a great relationship with.

In 2016, Dubai’s jewellery brand Damas unveiled Cruz as the face of its new product line, Sama. “We are thrilled to be working with Penelope, an ambassador whose values and characteristics perfectly fit the heart of the brand,” said Anan Fakhreddin, CEO of Damas.

We caught up with the stunning 43-year old Hollywood A-lister, and she was exactly like how she is in her films: a true, natural beauty.

What is your beauty secret?

Sleep. It’s just that I don’t get a lot of it right now because of the kids. I am also very disciplined about skin care, including using SPF every day and always taking my make-up off at night.

What does beauty mean to you?

Beauty is a very complex thing that can’t be put in a cage or defined by rules. It doesn’t have to be within the parameters that society dictates. It can be the face of a beautiful 90-year-old woman that is full of stories and emotion. Beauty is what somebody’s eyes communicate.

How long does it take for to get ready for the red carpet?

I grew up in my mother’s beauty salon, so I’m very aware of the difference that make-up can have. My hair and make-up team is a well-oiled machine, but in an ideal world I’d have an hour for hair and an hour for make-up.

Can you tell us how the process usually goes?

The dress comes first and then we decide on a look. But we don’t spend hours talking about it. My friend and trusted make-up artist, Pablo Iglesias, says my make-up doesn’t vary that much, although in the last few years we have switched my eye looks from smoky black to dark brown. It’s softer and more flattering than black, he says, and he goes for a chestnut brown and the full palette of smoky browns.

Would you ever consider cosmetic surgery?

I don’t know what I would do when I’m older. I haven’t thought about that. But I don’t judge those who have had plastic surgery.

How do you take care of your body?

I try to eat well, but I haven’t exercised for a while. I used to dance for 17 years — classical ballet, which was very disciplined. I like yoga and Pilates, but I don’t have the discipline to go to the gym.

What is your everyday-fashion style like?

I just wear jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers, if can go barefoot that’s even better. I have a stylist for events, and for business meetings, I like pieces by Isabel Marant. They’re so chic.

And now that you’re playing Donatella Versace, do you remember your very first piece by Versace?

I don’t remember the first one because it would probably be something from some vintage store, as at that time, I could not afford to get the real one. When I was 18 years old, I would scour all the vintage stores in New York for Versace and Chanel. I still go to vintage stores, I love them.

How many pieces from Versace would we find in your closet?

I think I knew every single piece from Versace by the time I was 15 because I was really, really a big fan. And I used to think, maybe one day I can get to wear his designs. And now, they make things for me. Donatella sends me the sketches, and they put my face there with the sketches. It had happened with Galliano, too, who made my wedding dress, and with Oscar De La Renta, who was a very good friend of mine. I also have sketches from Karl Lagerfeld.

These are designers that I have admired my whole life, and so I wear their pieces and I save them like a treasure. There’s a special and sentimental value behind these pieces, knowing that they have especially created them for you.

Do you have favourite pieces of jewellery?

I love my engagement ring and my wedding ring, of course. I used to have my grandmother’s ring, but it got stolen and you can’t replace it with anything else.

And what would you never leave your home without?

My phone because I must know that my kids are alright — I must be in contact, always. And my Tresor perfume — ever since I was 13 and my parents gave it to me for my birthday, I always carry it with me. I always take the small one with me when I travel.
