Dutch designer Rein van der Mast creates 18K solid gold 3D-printed pen
More than just creating state-of-the-art pens, Dutch designer Rein van der Mast of Pjotr is making a statement — the art of beautiful handwriting is not lost. At least not when you’re using his latest creation, the Spica Virginis, an 18K solid gold 3D-printed fountain pen and nib.
Named after Virgo, one of the brightest stars in the constellation, the pen resembles an ear of grain, reminiscent of ancient drawings wherein the ‘virgin’ holds a bundle of grain ears. The pen features a complex structure called a ‘non-uniform lattice’ that can only be achieved with 3D printing. Also available in 18K white gold, the extraordinary pens are limited edition. According to Van der Mast: “This type of white gold is developed for 3D printing, selective laser melting in particular. It is very white, and more important, it is very hard, eliminating the need for a rhodium coating.”
