Coco Chanel emboldened women to wear trousers whenever they wanted to — not just for work in factories. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we look at a jewellery designer stirring up another fashion revolution — of freeing fine jewellery from the confines of ballrooms and high halls.

Annoushka Ducas owns an eponymous company that creates haute joaillerie. Her pieces have adorned the likes of Gigi Hadid, Adele, Rita Ora, and Victoria Pendleton at parties, awards nights, and fashion shows. But Annoushka also wants to see her creations worn elsewhere.

“I have tried to remove the feeling of reverence that so often surrounds the whole experience of buying and wearing fine jewellery. I want our pieces to be worn every day; to encourage women to wear their huge, glamorous cocktail rings to a party, but also to dress up their jeans,” says the designer. She sees jewellery as talismanic in nature, a keepsake of precious moments — moments that could happen in the most unexpected of times and places, and yes, even while you’re wearing jeans.

Her collections come with names like Mythology and Dream Catcher. You see this clearly in their forms. Butterflies, grasshoppers, and spiders appear captured in motion, whether poised within a hoop pendant (see the Hoopla collection), embracing an earring, or cascading down a golden string. She presents these in vivid hues using coloured pearls and precious stones framed by gold in various shades.

With such whimsy in her pieces, it’s difficult not to heed Annoushka’s call to liberate fine jewellery from their boxes and wear them everyday, whether with jeans or couture gowns. For Annoushka, there should be no boundaries in pairing diamonds with clothes, and women should feel free to use jewellery as an expression of their unique identity. www.annoushka.com
