Leyla Abdollahi’s worldly perspective and inherent talent have led her to become one of today’s sought-after jewellery designers. Originally from Iran, Leyla draws inspiration from the exoticism and rich culture of her homeland. But she keeps her creations contemporary and relevant by using the techniques she learned from her studies in the West, and the diversity of London — a city she now calls home.

At 26, Leyla decided to pursue a career in jewellery-making and enrolled at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. By 2011, she was ready to launch her own brand. Leyla was all too aware of the challenges that lay ahead. Knowing that she was about to dive into an industry that was fiercely competitive, she equipped herself with the right attitude, coupled with confidence and individuality. “It was in a way intimidating because it doesn’t really matter if you’re just beginning or you’ve been in the business for a long time. You are constantly competing with other brands, and you have to stay focused. However, I try to see it in a positive way instead of getting intimidated,” she shared.

Leyla’s formal training has also encouraged her to have a methodical thought process when it comes to conceptualising and creating a collection. First, she determines a theme: “The concept will depend on what inspires me at the moment. From there, I start my research and then move on to the design process.” Beyond aesthetics, Leyla also looks to the psychology behind wearing jewellery, understanding that every culture has its own interpretation of what jewellery stands for.

Regardless of the meaning attached to jewellery or the reason for wearing them for that matter, Leyla firmly believes that we cannot underestimate the delight and thrill of owning and wearing a piece of jewellery. It is under this premise that she works towards creating her jewellery designs, which, according to her, should be a reflection of the wearer’s uniqueness, character, and sense of style. “My jewellery reflects emotions, passions, and desire with a burst of creativity. I start with a concept that blossoms into an elegant ornament,” she expressed.

The designer has been known within the industry as one who defies conventions and is completely unafraid to push the envelope with her designs and choice of materials. Her jewellery are often described as “modern, surreal, and bordering on Gothic”, using an abundance of coloured precious stones to create vibrant and utterly expressive pieces that are anything but customary.

Her Radiant Collection is inspired by the animated forms, shapes, and colours seen through a kaleidoscope. Drawn by the symmetrical patterns and the myriad of colour combinations, Leyla uses the playfulness and randomness of the shapes, as well as the bursts of colours, as inspirations for the pieces.

Another collection to highlight is called Passion. Although its strong biomorphic influences may be disturbing to some, the designs are absolutely impressive in front of the right audience. Here, we see flowers and nature’s creatures come alive, but not in the dainty and alluring fashion we’re accustomed to — rather in a Gothic and dark manner that makes a mark. With its seductive, flowing lines and the brilliant use of dark and mysterious undertones, this collection is surely not for the faint-hearted.
