MARION COTILLARD’S FRENCH CLASS

By Aniko Navai

Wearing a pair of black tights, a crispy white shirt, and very little make-up, Marion Cotillard looked chic as ever. Sitting on the floor in her suite at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons with cell phone in hand, and the room abuzz with excitement. That was in 2008, the day after she won a Golden Globe Award for her role as Edith Piaf in the film La Vie en Rose — which also won her an Oscar, Bafta, and César Best Actress awards.

Fast forward to 2016, and not much has changed about the elegant actress, except she has managed to successfully carve her own niche in the fleeting world of entertainment. Cotillard is the only French actress to ever win an Oscar, establishing herself as a leading actress in Hollywood. That aside, her fashion influence has become evident, too. She has been the face of Dior for years, and now one of the most visible supporters of Chopard where she designed a bracelet and a necklace made with opals sourced from a family-owned mine in Australia.

Why was it so important for you that the opals come from a clean source?

You design while thinking of the people who work on extracting the stones, so it’s a totally different energy. Why should the creation of dreams and luxury turn into a nightmare for the people who are providing the raw material?

Was it one of your dreams to design jewellery?

Not at all. When Caroline Scheufele suggested that I design a piece of jewellery, I thought it was an excellent way of supporting Chopard’s ethical commitment. But I would never have imagined that such a thing would happen. I don’t really do much design work. What I have done in the past, it’s always been in response to humanitarian organisations for very special projects.

Did Chopard give you a carte blanche?

No, I had to use small diamonds as well as opals. I immediately thought of a piece of jewellery for the hand, a bracelet connected to a chain and a ring — I don’t really know why. When I saw the finished product it was exactly what I had in mind.

What are you wearing today?

As for most press events, I’m wearing Dior. And the bracelet is from this store in London that I love. They have amazing stones. It comes from a South American tribe, but I don’t remember which. It’s my own jewellery.

Your cooperation with Dior has been going on for some years. So I really wonder, do you inspire the collection?

I don’t think so. I mean, a designer is inspired by the world. I know that they travel a lot and get inspired by art. I’m very inspired by them and by the House. I’m glad they let me be very creative. I directed with my co-director the last Dior movie. We even wrote a song especially for that movie, and I sang it. I have been inspired by Mr Dior himself, who was a great man.

Do you wear Dior all the time?

I don’t wear Dior all the time, but who wears the same brand all the time? I wear Dior, and my kid has a little stuffed animal that Dior gave him when he was born. But I also love Valentino, I love Alexander McQueen, and I love small brands that nobody knows. Talking about shoes, I love this French brand that does sneakers. It’s an amazing brand and fair trade — they use organic, eco-friendly, and sustainable materials.

How passionate are you about fashion?

I didn’t really pay attention to fashion before. I mean, I love to dress up and I like clothes, but as I told you, I didn’t see fashion as an art form. Whereas now, I see it as a very, very special form of art. And being able to enter a House like Dior, and you see all these artisans who have been working for them for years and who are so good and passionate at what they do. It was wonderful. They opened my mind and really taught me everything I know about fashion. They changed my vision of fashion. I love the people at Dior, and I feel very lucky and very happy to work with them.

What’s your favourite Dior outfit?

I had a huge chance to do a photo shoot with all the outfits made by Mr Dior himself. And it was very emotional. I felt very moved when I wore those dresses from the 1940s. It was really something. So I would say my favourite is the Monsieur Dior creation.

Do you look at beauty differently now?

I’ve always looked at beauty differently. I was raised with the idea of a different beauty. Not a physical beauty, but something that really comes out of you and surrounds you.
